Final Project Reflection:
My overall experience has been amazing, not only did I have an extraordinary amount of fun, I also learned a lot and got to tell a lot of friends about what I learned as well. I feel that this project was successful, and although I didn't do anything to help the environment, I still got to teach people about a different environment and show how much there is to experience out there. I feel that I did meet my goal, and that I want to keep learning about Hawaii, I'm even starting to teach myself the Hawaiian language! I'm very glad I was able to do my project on Hawaii, and was able to share just a portion of what I've learned over the eight days I stayed there. This project taught me a lot and cultivated my passions as well as showed me a lot of new things and brought amazing experiences. I hope that everyone else doing this project had a great time and learned a few things a long the way! Thank you to everyone who is reading this for taking this journey with me and lstening to what I had to say! (: Mahalo!
Narrative (Short Story):
My Gecko Experience
My first time seeing a gecko was, well, interesting. I hadn't ever seen one before, not at zoo's, nothing. I figured the only place I'd ever be able to see one was in Hawaii. When my parents and I arrived at the house where we stayed, we immediately noticed about five or six geckos all over the walls, I noticed it was a gecko by the greenish yellow skin color and the red along its back. I yelled "Look, guys! It's a gecko!" with the biggest smile on my face. My mom then ran over and smiled, as if she had seen them before. "When me and your father went to Kauai, they were everywhere, even in the dresser drawers" she said quietly, trying not to scare off the little guy. I then put my hand closer to the gecko, approaching it slowly. I remembered for a second what I had researched about geckos, that they are extremely hard to catch. While approaching, it then started to crawl away, up the wall, unlit it was too high to reach. Slightly sighing, I turned around to what may have been three geckos all over the patio table, eating what looked to have been a stale cookie. While he was eating the cookie, I approached him even slower then I did with the last gecko. I was able to get very close, since the gecko was distracted with the cookie! "Mom I got one!" I yelled in joy, the gecko had crawled right up my arm. I hadn't ever felt anything like that before, its feet were like little suction cups. It was definitely very exciting. After then, I made sure to leave a cookie outside every day, and couldn't wait to play with another one.

Wednesday

How is it going?: My family and I have been having a wonderful time, and have experienced a lot things with them! My experience has been wonderful, I've learned many new things, such as certain pin points of Hawaii's history and a lot of facts revolving around the big island. My mentor and I have been with each other a lot throughout this, and have been talking a lot about different facts, even while in the car! We attended the volcano, which hasn't been active in over thirty years. While there, I learned history about the volcano, and also got to see it in action. The view wasn't that great, caused by the roads all being cut off. Many different people were gathered around, and it was a pretty large croud!
What do I need to change?: Nothing! There's nothing I would want to change towards this project. I'm very happy to be able to have this experience and share it with others! What's working well for me is being myself, having fun, and learning so much! I've been reading articles and websites about hawaii constantly, though my memory tends to not be the best, I'm trying my hardest to remember everything, even if it takes re-reading repeatedly. Overall I'm glad I choose to do my project on Hawaiian culture, its so much fun! Here's some photos that I've taken:
                                    -Volcano
Like I said, the view wasn't that great, especially during the day. But it was still a really awesome experience, especially with binoculars! The road was closed off due to the amount of bursts the volcano is having, and we weren't able to go past the tourist point.

What Are My Plans?

My plans for the 20% project: I plan on studying, learning, and teaching different things about Hawaiian culture. I will be traveling to Hawaii April 28th, and along the way will be searching to learn different interesting things revolving around The Big Island, where I'll be staying for the following eight days. I plan to answer questions that people may have and educate people on the history of Hawaii. I will also be posting occasional photos and facts on Hawaii onto my tumblr, so check that out as well! http://theheartofhawaii.tumblr.com/

What is the meaning of this project?: There are many different reasons I chose to do my project on teaching about Hawaiian culture and history, one of them being that I have the opportunity to share my experiences and my discoveries with others. I plan to work on this project with my Mentor, which will be my mother. She will be helping me put the project together, as well as sharing the journey with me. We will be participating in many different cultural activities such as my first luau! We will also be exploring the surrounding jungles and visiting historical places.

Why is this worth it?: While spending time in Hawaii, not only will I be learning, but I'll also be able to share what I learned with others, that's the main reason why this project is worthwhile. I'm very excited to portion what I've learned with people and am glad I may be able to help someone make future decisions on visiting there. What I plan to present at the end of this project is a journal on the things I've learned and taught, the people I've met, and the experiences I've had.

What I expect to learn: I expect to learn many different varieties of culture and history on Hawaii, as well as how to work with people and teach things I've researched and learned. This blog will be where I will talk about Hawaii, as well as answer any questions you all may have. I'm very excited to present this when it is all finished. Thank you for taking this journey along side me!
